Skystation

Encouraging people to take a moment, reflect and connect with themselves and others and to look up at the sky, the Skystation sculpture at Canada Square in Canary wharf is a public seat that has been designed as a comfortable place to linger and emotionally escape. Designed to be as simple as possible, the aluminium-bronze bench (reminiscent of a flying saucer) designed by Peter Newman, was inspired by Le Corbusier’s LC4 chaise-longue. When reclining, the seat puts people in a similar position to what NASA calls ‘Neutral Body Posture’ which is when the body is free from gravity - creating the perfect opportunity for pause and reflection.
