Is profit a dirty word?
At last year’s Devil’s Advocate we talked a lot about cost, value and risk - but much less openly about profit.
There was perhaps a time when healthy margins across the industry meant that the problems encountered along the way could be absorbed. Today, we hear much more about the risk businesses are taking, but rarely about the profit they need to make.
So, is it time to be more open about profit?
At what point in a project should we talk about the returns that investors, developers, consultants and contractors need; and could greater transparency help more of the project team make a reasonable profit, more often?
After all, profit isn't simply money left on the table. It allows businesses to invest in people, quality and innovation, and provides the resilience to deal with the unexpected. If every part of the supply chain is pushed towards its lowest possible margin, does that really deliver the best value or just move risk elsewhere?
Is it simply up to the individual business, or could a more collaborative approach to risk, reward and profit create better projects?
Join us for this frank discussion around risk and profit, a follow-up to last year’s Devil’s Advocate: Rethinking the Race (read the event write-up).
